Two Poems

by David Estringel

Black Dog

The black dog

lounges ‘neath the apple tree

‘mongst baskets

overflowin’ haphazard tumbles

o’ reds

n yellows

n greens,

cas'ally gnawin’ its newly 'quired bone.

Looks right past me—

disinterested—

tow’rd unadorned trunks o’er my shoulder,

turning a blind eye

and fickle attentions

‘til

the last apple falls.

The Day the Apples Fell

Driving down I-90—

Lucky Strike danglin’

from my mouth—

an empty suitcase

sits in the back

ready for a harvest
