Two Poems
Poetry by Angela Arnold
being the apple tree
swayswaysway
sway right in there
spin round and roundround
the airy middle of a green-flashing crown
spin amid that dancing host of like
spinning spirits and sway
sway with the whole sway of it
in the wind of ages
seed to root
to sapling to this:
the trunk of heaven
and the yield of branches
the too ready fruit
being it all the way
glimpse
a flare of brown/orange and
gone
flutter of an all-time favourite
(pretty sure)
at this time of year usually found
haunting brambles:
basking on the whiteness of trusses
arching with promise
it startled into view
like a flash
of laid-aside maybes –
hopeful alternatives
to the too many prickly nows
barren tomorrows
the too many glimpses
and gones
the orange heat of it still
glowing
in these dull-leaved thickets
still promising
just possibly
a whole year
